Hoya praetorii is native to Southeast Asia, particularly Sumatra, Borneo, and parts of Indonesia, and grows upright rather than twining strongly, often developing a somewhat bushy habit.

Features:

  • Leaves: Thin, dark green leaves with pronounced veins, and sometimes small silvery flecks.

    • Leaf size: around 12‑18 cm long and 5‑9 cm wide.

  • Flowers:

    • They form in umbels of 10‑20 flowers.

    • The corolla is a bright orange and is densely covered in fine white hairs, giving them a fuzzy or “hairy” look.

    • Corona (the central part of the flower) tends toward beige or burgundy / wine-red.

    • Flower size: approx 2 cm long when reflexed, with a diameter of ~1 cm.

    • Scent: faintly sweet, slightly citrusy.

    • Duration: blooms last up to about two weeks.

Care Tips:

  • Light: Likes bright, diffused light, but avoid very strong, direct sun.

  • Watering: Needs more water than many Hoyas — “plenty, but let it dry somewhat between waterings.”

  • Soil / Medium: Use a well-draining, airy mix. It does poorly in compacted or soggy soil.

  • Temperature: Does not tolerate cool temps well; keep above ~14 °C (57°F).

  • Humidity: Prefers high humidity, as it naturally grows in tropical rainforests.

  • Fertilizing: During its growing season (spring/summer), use a diluted fertilizer; reduce during rest.

  • Flowering Tips:

    • During bloom time, stable warmth + good light helps.

    • The peduncles (flower stalks) can look fragile, but that’s often normal.

  • Propagation: Can be propagated from stem cuttings; rooting can be aided by bottom heat.
