Acrostichum aureum is a pantropical fern found throughout tropical and subtropical regions of Asia, Africa, the Americas, and the Pacific islands. It thrives in wet, marshy, or swampy habitats such as mangrove swamps, salt marshes, brackish water zones, riverbanks, and the edges of waterways. While it can tolerate some salinity, it does not withstand continuous submersion, instead favoring areas that are periodically inundated.
Features:
-
Large, robust fern with leathery, pinnate fronds.
-
Fronds may reach up to ~3–4 meters long in favorable conditions.
-
The pinnae (leaflets) are widely spaced, ascending, and tough; fertile pinnae (usually the upper ones) bear many sporangia on the underside.
Care Tips:
-
Provide consistently moist to wet substrate; a soil or mix that retains moisture (e.g. swampy garden soil).
-
High humidity environment works best.
-
Light: tolerates full to partial sun in its natural habitat, especially in mangrove fringes; but when cultivated, bright light filtered or partial shade helps reduce stress.
-
Temperature: tropical/subtropical climate; avoid frost and cold exposure.
-
Propagation: by spores, or by dividing the rhizomes.
