Adiantum flabellulatum is a species of maidenhair fern in the family Pteridaceae. It is native to tropical and subtropical Asia, including India, Myanmar, southern China, Taiwan, southern Japanese islands, Thailand, Vietnam, Malesia, etc.

It usually grows on humus-rich ground in open forests, on forest floors, banks, or rock ledges, often in acidic or sandy loam soils. Altitude range is up to about 580 m in some parts of its range.

Care Tips:

  • Light: Bright, indirect light or partial shade. Because in nature it often grows under forest canopy or in open forests, direct strong sunlight (especially midday) should be avoided to prevent leaf scorch.

  • Soil / Substrate: Use a humus-rich, well-draining substrate. A mix that includes organic matter (leaf litter, compost), plus some mineral content (sand or grit) would help mimic its natural soil (humus-rich ground, sometimes rock ledges). Slightly acidic soil tends to be favorable.

  • Moisture / Humidity: Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. High humidity is beneficial, as the fern naturally grows in moist forested conditions. Avoid letting the soil dry out completely.

  • Temperature: Subtropical to tropical conditions are best. Since its elevation range goes up to ~580 m, it tolerates moderate temperatures, but should be protected from cold or frost.

  • Protection & Positioning: If growing outdoors, put it in a spot sheltered from drying winds and direct, harsh sun. Indoors, avoid heat vents, drafty windows; ensure stable moisture and humidity.

  • Propagation & Maintenance: Remove old or damaged fronds to keep the plant tidy. Propagation is typically by division of rhizomes or by spores (though spore propagation takes patience). Good drainage with moisture retention in the soil is key; repotting when overcrowded may help.
