Aerangis appendiculata is a small, warm-to-cool-growing epiphytic orchid native to Malawi, Mozambique, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. It thrives in evergreen forests, woodlands, and thickets at elevations ranging from 1,150 to 1,850 meters. Typically found on tree trunks in deep shade, it occasionally grows as a lithophyte in brighter light at higher elevations.

Flowering & Fragrance:

  • Produces fragrant, white flowers with pinkish pedicels and spurs.

  • Flowers bloom in spring on an axillary, pendant inflorescence measuring 7.5 to 15 cm in length, with up to 10 flowers.

Care Tips:

Light

  • Provide bright, filtered light, avoiding direct midday sun.

  • Ideal light levels range from 15,000 to 23,000 lux.

  • Ensure strong air movement to prevent fungal issues.

Temperature

  • Summer: Daytime temperatures around 25–26°C, with nighttime drops to 16°C.

  • Spring: Daytime temperatures increase to 26–28°C, with nighttime temperatures ranging from 9°C to 15°C.

Humidity

  • Maintain humidity levels between 75% and 85% during summer and early autumn.

  • Gradually decrease humidity to near 50% in early spring at the end of the dry season.

Watering

  • Water regularly, allowing the medium to dry slightly between waterings.

  • During warm weather, daily watering may be necessary.

  • Ensure good drainage to prevent root rot.

Mounting & Medium

  • Best grown mounted on tree fern or cork bark to mimic natural habitat.

  • Alternatively, use a well-draining mix suitable for epiphytic orchids.

Fertilization

  • Apply a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer diluted to one-quarter strength every 2 to 4 weeks during the growing season.

  • Reduce feeding during the dormant period.
