Aerangis biloba (Lindl.) Schltr. is a small, warm-growing epiphytic orchid native to tropical West and Central Africa, including Senegal, Ghana, Nigeria, Cameroon and Gabon. It grows on trees in forests, woodland thickets and cultivated landscapes. This species is known for its distinctive fleshy leaves with two-lobed tips, sometimes marked with dark spots, and its elegant pendant flower spikes carrying white, waxy, star-shaped flowers with long nectar spurs. The flowers are fragrant, particularly at night.
Care Tips:
-
Light: Provide low to moderate, filtered light or bright shade. Avoid direct midday sunlight, which can scorch the leaves.
-
Watering: Water frequently, allowing the roots to approach dryness between waterings. Never leave the roots continuously soggy or completely dry for extended periods.
-
Growing Medium: Mount on cork or tree-fern slabs for excellent airflow, or grow in a small, well-ventilated pot or basket with fine bark and a little sphagnum moss.
-
Humidity: Maintain approximately 60–85% humidity with good air circulation.
-
Temperature: Warm to intermediate conditions are suitable. Aim for approximately 20–28°C (68–82°F) during the day and 13–20°C (55–68°F) at night.
-
Airflow: Provide gentle, continuous airflow to prevent fungal problems and allow the roots to dry between waterings.
-
Fertilizing: Apply a diluted balanced orchid fertilizer every 2–3 weeks during active growth. Avoid excessive fertilizer, as its fine roots are sensitive to salt buildup.
-
Potting: Mounting is an excellent option. If potted, use a small container with an airy medium and avoid disturbing the delicate roots.
-
Repotting: Repot or remount only when necessary, as established plants can be sensitive to root disturbance.
-
Flowering: Bright filtered light, adequate moisture, healthy roots and slightly cooler nights can help encourage flowering. The flowers are particularly attractive in the evening when their fragrance is most noticeable.
