Aerangis citrata, commonly known as the Lemon-scented Aerangis, is a miniature epiphytic orchid native to Madagascar. This species is celebrated for its delicate, fragrant white flowers and is well-suited for cultivation in controlled environments such as terrariums or orchidariums.
Features:
-
Leaves: 3–4 pairs of glossy, dark green, elliptical leaves, each 9–12 cm long.
-
Flowers: Small, waxy, white to pale yellow blooms measuring 1.5–2.0 cm in diameter, borne on 40 cm long, pendant inflorescences.
-
Fragrance: Emits a pleasant lemon scent, especially prominent in newly opened flowers.
Care Tips:
-
Light: Prefers bright, indirect light. Direct sunlight should be avoided to prevent leaf burn.
-
Temperature: Thrives in intermediate to warm temperatures. Daytime temperatures should range between 20–28°C (68–82°F), with nighttime temperatures around 18°C (64°F).
-
Humidity: Requires high humidity levels, ideally between 75–80%. Consistent misting or placement in a humid environment is beneficial.
-
Watering: Water thoroughly when the potting medium begins to dry out. Use distilled or rainwater to avoid mineral buildup. Ensure good drainage to prevent root rot.
-
Substrate: A well-draining mix of fine fir bark, sphagnum moss, and perlite is recommended. Growing on mounts or in baskets allows for better air circulation around the roots.
-
Fertilization: Apply a balanced orchid fertilizer at half strength every 2–4 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). Reduce or eliminate fertilization during the dormant period.
-
Air Circulation: Ensure strong air movement around the plant to prevent fungal and bacterial issues.
