Aerangis punctata is a rare and exquisite miniature orchid species native to the central highlands of Madagascar and Réunion Island. This epiphytic orchid thrives at elevations between 900 and 1,500 meters in humid, shaded forests, typically growing on shrubs and trees.
Features:
-
Size & Growth Habit: Aerangis punctata is a compact orchid, with a total height of less than 1.5 inches (approximately 3.8 cm). It features up to three large flowers per inflorescence, each measuring up to 4 inches (10 cm) in diameter. The plant has grayish-green, flattened, verrucose roots and elliptic or oblong leaves that are acutely bilobed at the apex, adorned with silver spots.
-
Flowers: The flowers are white with a salmon tint at the extremities, exhibiting a star-shaped appearance. They are proportionally large compared to the plant's size and emit a pleasant fragrance, typically blooming in spring and summer.
Care Tips:
-
Light: Provide bright, indirect light. A location less than 3 feet from a south-facing window is ideal.
-
Temperature: Maintain temperatures between 20°C and 30°C (68°F to 86°F) during the day, with nighttime temperatures around 15°C to 20°C (59°F to 68°F).
-
Humidity: High humidity levels, ranging from 50% to 70%, are essential for healthy growth.
-
Watering: Water the plant regularly, allowing the medium to dry slightly between waterings. Reduce watering during the winter rest period and avoid letting the plant sit in water to prevent root rot.
-
Fertilization: Use a balanced orchid fertilizer diluted to half strength every 4–6 weeks during the growing season. Avoid fertilizing during the winter rest period.
-
Mounting: Grow the orchid mounted on smooth hardwood or cork bark to ensure good air circulation and rapid drying between waterings.
