Registered by F. Hillerman in 1982, Angraecum Longiscott is a primary hybrid (grex) formed from a cross between Angraecum longicalcar and Angraecum scottianum.

Features:

  • Angraecum longicalcar is a critically endangered species from Madagascar, famed for its extraordinarily long nectar spur—among the longest in the orchid world, reaching up to 40 cm.

  • Angraecum scottianum contributes other desirable traits to this hybrid's lineage.

Care Tips:

Growing Year-Round

  • Angraecum Longiscott grows continuously, with no true dormancy, making it a rewarding year-round performer.

Temperature

  • Optimal daytime temperatures: approximately 15–24 °C (59–75 °F).

Watering

  • Warm season (spring–fall):

    • Mounted plants: water daily.

    • Potted/basket-grown: water at least twice weekly.

  • Cool season (winter):

    • Potted/basket-grown: reduce to once weekly watering.

    • Mounted: 2–4 times per week.

  • Avoid allowing water to pool at the base of leaves to prevent stem or crown rot.

Humidity & Airflow

  • Maintain 60–80% humidity with good ventilation to support healthy growth and prevent fungal issues.

Light & Placement

  • Best in partial shade—bright but indirect light works well.

Potting Medium & Mounting

  • Thrives both mounted or in a basket/terra-cotta pot with excellent drainage.

  • Media recommendations include coarse mixes using coconut husk, charcoal, perlite, fir bark, possibly with a layer of moss to retain some moisture.

  • In a basket or pot, it grows up to twice as fast compared to mounted culture.

Fertilization & Maintenance

  • Fertilize weekly, year-round, with a balanced orchid fertilizer.

  • Many growers supplement with “dynamite”—a high-phosphorus bloom-enhancer—by placing a small amount in the potting media.

  • Apply a systemic fungicide every 4–6 weeks, and treat spot issues with a topical fungicide as needed.
