Begonia caryotarum is a rare rhizomatous begonia species described in 2021 from southeastern Yunnan, China. It belongs to Begonia section Platycentrum and grows naturally in crevices among rocks at the base of limestone hills, within forests of Caryota obtusa, at elevations of approximately 700–900 meters. Its asymmetrical leaves may be green to reddish-brown, sometimes marked with silver spots or blotches. The flowers are pink to orange-red, creating a striking contrast with the foliage.
Care Tips:
-
Light: Provide moderate to bright indirect light. Avoid harsh direct sunlight, especially during hot weather.
-
Temperature: Maintain warm, stable conditions, ideally around 18–26°C (64–79°F), and protect the plant from cold drafts.
-
Humidity: Aim for approximately 60–80% humidity with gentle air circulation.
-
Watering: Keep the growing medium lightly moist, allowing the surface to dry slightly between waterings. Avoid waterlogged roots and rhizomes.
-
Growing Medium: Use a loose, airy, well-draining mix with organic matter and perlite to balance moisture retention and drainage.
-
Fertilizing: During active growth, apply a balanced fertilizer diluted to half strength every 2–4 weeks.
-
Air Circulation: Maintain gentle airflow to help reduce the risk of fungal problems in humid conditions.
-
Acclimation: After shipping, gradually acclimate the plant to its new environment and avoid sudden changes in humidity and watering.
