Begonia exibela is a striking foliage begonia with dramatic, deeply textured leaves and intricate silver-green patterns against a rich, almost black background. The broad, asymmetrical leaves feature irregular silvery patches radiating from the central veins, surrounded by dark chocolate-brown to burgundy markings and intricately ruffled, scalloped margins. The raised, quilted leaf surface adds remarkable depth and texture, giving the plant an almost sculptural appearance.
Care Tips:
-
Light: Provide bright, indirect light or filtered shade. Avoid strong direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves and damage their delicate texture.
-
Water: Keep the growing medium evenly moist but never waterlogged. Allow the top layer to dry slightly before watering again, and ensure excess water drains freely.
-
Humidity: Moderate to high humidity is beneficial. Aim for around 60–80% humidity while maintaining good air circulation to reduce the risk of fungal diseases.
-
Temperature: Maintain a warm, stable environment, ideally around 18–26°C (65–79°F). Protect the plant from cold drafts and sudden temperature fluctuations.
-
Growing Medium: Use a loose, airy, well-draining mix with good moisture retention, such as peat or coco coir combined with perlite and fine organic material.
-
Fertilizer: During active growth, apply a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength every 2–4 weeks. Avoid overfertilizing.
-
Acclimation: After arrival, keep the plant in a stable, humid environment and allow it to acclimate before repotting. Avoid disturbing the roots unnecessarily.
-
Air Circulation: Ensure gentle, consistent airflow around the foliage. Avoid prolonged leaf wetness and stagnant conditions, which can encourage fungal problems.
