Begonia scapigera is a rhizomatous African begonia species native to Cameroon and other parts of West/Central Africa. It features bright green peltate (shield-shaped) leaves often edged in rust red, and produces clusters of vibrant yellow flowers — a relatively rare trait among begonias. It is adapted to warm, humid, low-light under-canopy rainforest conditions, and thus prefers high humidity and indirect light when grown indoors or in a terrarium.

Features:

  • Unique Foliage: Begonia scapigera boasts peltate (umbrella-shaped) green leaves with a subtle sheen under low light. The edges of the leaves are beautifully tinged with rusty red, making it a striking addition to any plant collection.

  • Vibrant Yellow Flowers: The plant produces clusters of bright yellow flowers, which are rare and delightful among begonias, offering a cheerful contrast to its unique foliage.

  • Compact Size: Typically growing to 8 to 10 inches (20 to 25 cm) in height, this begonia is perfect for small spaces, making it ideal for indoor environments, terrariums, or greenhouses.

Care Tips for Begonia scapigera:

  • Light Requirements: Thrives in bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves.

  • Temperature Range: Prefers temperatures between 45°F to 95°F (7°C to 35°C). Ideal for most indoor environments.

  • Humidity Needs: Begonia scapigera requires humidity levels of 60% or higher. Growing in a terrarium, greenhouse, or a well-maintained indoor environment with higher humidity is ideal.

  • Watering Tips: Keep the soil evenly moist. Water when the top 2 inches of soil feel dry, ensuring good drainage to avoid waterlogging.
