Begonia ‘Sophie Cecile’ (also known as ‘Sophia’ in some contexts) is a striking cane-stem or “angel wing” begonia cultivar first created by hybridizer Belva Nelson Kusler in 1961, via a cross between Begonia ‘Lenore Olivier’ and Begonia aconitifolia.

Features:

Foliage & Form

  • Deeply lobed, large dark green leaves with striking silver speckles on the upper surface and maroon/blood-red undersides.

  • Exhibits a vertical, cane-like growth habit, forming an elegant, upright silhouette.

Size

  • Typically reaches 0.5–1 meter in height and 0.1–0.5 meter in spread.

  • Other sources suggest it can grow as tall as 3–4 feet (around 1.2 m).

Flowers

  • Produces dangling clusters of salmon-pink to rose-pink flowers, often fragrant, appearing from spring through autumn.

Care Tips:

Light

Thrives in bright, filtered light or partial shade. Avoid intense direct sun to prevent leaf scorch.

Soil & Watering

  • Needs well-draining, rich potting mix.

  • Keep soil evenly moist, watering when the top inch (2 cm) feels dry; avoid waterlogged conditions.

Temperature & Humidity

  • Prefers tropical/subtropical conditions—frost-free environments only.

  • Benefits from moderate to high humidity to prevent brown leaf edges from dryness.

Propagation

  • Can be propagated via stem cuttings or division.

  • Hobbyist growers also report success using water propagation or LECA semi-hydro methods.
