Begonia Tanjiewhoei, also known as Begonia sp. Trang or the Turtle Begonia, is a rare and captivating species native to the limestone karst regions of Thailand. A rhizomatous species that resembles Begonia kingiana but with more contrasting colors, it produces thick, succulent-like leaves marked with striking rust and dark patterns that intensify as the plant matures, while also showing a notable resilience to occasional drying out.
Care Tips:
- Light: Prefers bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight to prevent leaf burn and ensure healthy growth.
- Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist, allowing the top layer to dry slightly between waterings. Be sure to avoid waterlogging to prevent root rot.
- Humidity: Thrives in high humidity (70%+). Mist regularly or use a humidifier to maintain optimal conditions.
- Temperature: Ideal temperatures range from 65°F to 80°F (18°C to 27°C). Protect from drafts and sudden temperature changes to ensure the plant’s health.
- Soil: Requires a well-draining, airy potting mix. A combination of orchid bark, perlite, and peat moss is perfect for mimicking its natural environment.
- Fertilization: Apply a balanced, diluted liquid fertilizer monthly during the growing season (spring and summer) to encourage vibrant growth.
