Begonia ‘White Ice’ is a cane-type hybrid begonia with deep green, long, narrow, asymmetrical leaves densely covered in silvery-white spots, creating a frosted “white ice” effect. Mature leaves typically measure 10–20 cm in length. It produces delicate pale pink flowers in clusters, providing a soft contrast to its striking foliage.
Features:
-
Grows upright with branching cane-like stems—ideal for shelves, containers, or displaying vertically.
-
Can reach heights between 60–100 cm under optimal conditions.
- In low light, the leaves develop a brighter, more silvery-white appearance, while in bright light, they become deeper green.
Care Tips:
Light
-
Thrives in bright, indirect light (e.g., east or filtered south-facing window).
-
Avoid direct sun, which can scorch the leaves; too little light may cause leggy growth or muted leaf markings.
Watering & Soil
-
Use a well-draining, airy potting mix—peat-based blends with perlite, bark, or African violet mixes work well.
-
Water thoroughly but allow the top 1–2 cm of soil to dry before watering again to avoid overwatering.
Temperature & Humidity
-
Prefers 18–24 °C (65–75 °F) consistently; avoid drafty spots or heating/cooling vents.
-
Humidity should be above 60%. Increase humidity using pebble trays, grouping plants, or humidifiers—avoid misting to reduce risk of fungal issues.
Fertilizer
-
During spring and summer, feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer (half strength) every 2–4 weeks, or use slow-release options.
-
Reduce or cease fertilizing during fall and winter when growth slows.
Pruning & Repotting
-
Prune away yellowing or dead foliage and pinch tips to promote bushier growth.
-
Repot every 1–2 years only if root-bound—choose a pot just one size larger.
Propagation
-
Easily propagated through stem cuttings with at least two nodes—root in water or moist soil.
