Bertolonia marmorata 'Sanderiana', native to the tropical forests of Brazil, is a beautifully marked Melastome known for its broad, silvery-white leaves. With its slow growth, this variety is especially coveted by terrarium enthusiasts and collectors of rare tropical plants.
Features:
- Foliage: The leaves are heart-shaped, velvety, and approximately 12–20 cm (5–8 inches) long. They are deep green with broad, silvery-white stripes running lengthwise along the veins. The undersides are a reddish-brown hue.
-
Growth Habit: Compact and creeping, with stems that trail along the soil surface and gently curve upward at the tips. Mature plants typically do not exceed 15 cm (6 inches) in height.
-
Flowers: Small, star-shaped, and purple, measuring about 2 cm (0.8 inches) across. They bloom intermittently throughout the year on short, stiff flower stalks.
Care Tips:
-
Light: Prefers bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight to prevent leaf scorch.
-
Temperature: Optimal growth occurs between 15°C and 30°C (59°F to 86°F). It is sensitive to cold and should be kept in temperatures above 10°C (50°F).
-
Humidity: Requires high humidity levels, ideally between 60% and 100%. Regular misting, a humidity tray, or placement within a terrarium can help maintain these conditions.
-
Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Allow the top inch of soil to dry out between waterings to prevent root rot.
-
Soil: Use a well-draining, acidic to neutral potting mix. A blend of peat and perlite is often recommended.
-
Fertilization: Feed with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer diluted to half strength every 4–6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer).
