Brassavola Grand Stars is an orchid hybrid in the Brassavola genus, created by crossing Brassavola nodosa with Brassavola Little Stars (itself a primary hybrid of B. nodosa × B. subulifolia). This hybrid typically produces fragrant, star‑shaped flowers that inherit the night‑scented charm of B. nodosa and the refined floral form of B. Little Stars, often emitting a strong sweet or citrus‑like fragrance at dusk.
Care Tips:
-
Light: Provide bright, indirect light with some morning or late afternoon sun. Brassavola types enjoy strong light but avoid prolonged harsh midday sunlight.
-
Watering: Water thoroughly, then allow the potting medium to dry slightly before watering again. Overwatering or standing water can lead to root issues.
-
Humidity: Maintain moderate to high humidity (50–70%). Use humidity trays or a humidifier if the air is dry.
-
Temperature: Grow in warm conditions (~65–85°F / 18–29°C) with slightly cooler nights. Protect from temperatures below ~55°F (13°C) or extreme heat above ~90°F (32°C).
-
Potting Medium & Drainage: Use a well‑draining orchid mix (e.g., coarse bark with perlite/charcoal). Good airflow around the roots helps prevent rot. Repot every 1–2 years or when the medium decomposes.
-
Fertilization: During active growth (spring through early fall), apply a balanced orchid fertilizer diluted to half strength every 2–4 weeks. Reduce feeding in winter.
-
Airflow: Ensure good air circulation to reduce fungal and bacterial problems, especially with higher humidity levels.
-
After Bloom: Remove spent flower spikes, and allow a slight rest period with less water and feeding before the new growth cycle begins.
