Brassavola nodosa ‘Whimsy’ FCC/AOS is a large-flowered, vigorous clone of the popular Lady of the Night orchid; Brassavola nodosa is a small to medium-sized epiphytic species known for its white to pale green flowers and extremely fragrant scent in the evening, which it uses to attract night-pollinating moths — hence the name “Lady of the Night,” and the plant has slender, cylindrical leaves with long, narrow sepals and petals and a larger, often heart-shaped lip.
Care Tips:
-
Light: Bright, strong light is essential. Provide bright indirect light or some morning/evening sun. Insufficient light reduces blooming; too much direct midday sun may scorch leaves.
-
Temperature: Prefers warm to intermediate conditions, about 18–29 °C (65–85 °F) during the day, with a slight drop at night to encourage flowering.
-
Water: Water thoroughly when the growing medium is nearly dry, then allow excess water to drain completely. Avoid constant moisture, as overwatering can cause root rot.
-
Humidity & Airflow: Moderate to high humidity (around 50–70%) with good air circulation is ideal. Adequate airflow helps prevent fungal and bacterial issues.
-
Potting & Medium: Use a very well-draining medium such as coarse bark, cork, or tree fern fiber, or grow mounted on slabs or in baskets to ensure excellent root aeration.
-
Fertilizer: Feed lightly with a balanced orchid fertilizer diluted to about ¼–½ strength during active growth. Reduce feeding during cooler or dormant periods.
-
Flowering Tips: Slightly reduced watering after new growth matures, along with cooler nights, can help initiate flower spikes.
