Brassocattleya Amethyst is an intergeneric orchid hybrid (genus Brassocattleya, abbreviated Bc.) that combines the elegant form and fragrance of Brassavola cucullata with the colorful flower traits of Laelia purpurata. It is a primary cross between two species and produces striking blooms often in purple or violet hues with a pleasant scent.

Parentage & Background:

  • Seed Parent: Brassavola cucullata

  • Pollen Parent: Laelia purpurata (now often classified as Cattleya purpurata)

Bc. Amethyst typically displays a blend of features inherited from both parents — the elongated, elegant petals reminiscent of Brassavola and the richer color and substance from Laelia/Cattleya purpurata.

Care Tips:

  • Light: Bright, filtered or indirect light is best; some morning or late afternoon sun is helpful, but avoid harsh midday sun to prevent leaf burn.

  • Temperature: Ideal daytime range is 70–85°F (21–29°C) with nighttime lows around 55–65°F (13–18°C). Do not let temperatures drop too low.

  • Watering: Water thoroughly when the potting medium begins to dry; let excess water drain away and avoid letting the plant sit in standing water. Water less often in winter.

  • Humidity: Maintain moderate to high humidity (50–70%) with good air circulation to reduce disease risk.

  • Potting Medium: Use a well‑draining orchid mix (such as bark with perlite/charcoal). Repot every 1–2 years or when the medium begins to decompose.

  • Fertilization: During active growth (spring through early autumn), fertilize every 2–4 weeks with a balanced orchid fertilizer diluted to about half strength; reduce feeding in the cooler/dormant period.

  • Dry/Wet Cycle: Let the mix dry slightly between waterings; Brassocattleya types prefer a wet/dry cycle rather than constant moisture.

  • Airflow: Good airflow helps prevent rot and fungal issues, especially with higher humidity.
