Brassocattleya Saint André (abbreviated Bc. Saint André) is a primary hybrid in the Cattleya alliance resulting from a cross between Brassavola nodosa × Cattleya dowiana. As a hybrid derived directly from two species, it combines the vigorous growth habit and star-shaped floral influence of B. nodosa with the rich coloration and classic Cattleya flower form of C. dowiana, producing striking and elegant blooms characteristic of Brassocattleya hybrids.
Care Tips:
-
Light:
-
Bright, indirect light is ideal.
-
Some morning or late afternoon sun is fine; avoid strong midday sun to prevent leaf burn.
-
-
Watering:
-
Water thoroughly when the potting medium begins to dry out.
-
Allow the medium to dry lightly between waterings; do not let roots sit in standing water.
-
-
Temperature:
-
Intermediate to warm: daytime ~21–29 °C (70–85 °F).
-
Nights moderately cooler help mimic natural conditions.
-
-
Humidity & Airflow:
-
Moderate humidity (~50–70%) with good air circulation helps reduce rot and fungal issues.
-
-
Potting Medium & Repotting:
-
Use a well-draining orchid mix (e.g., bark + perlite/charcoal).
-
Repot every ~1–2 years when the medium breaks down or roots fill the pot.
-
-
Fertilizing:
-
Apply a balanced orchid fertilizer diluted to half strength during active growth.
-
Feed every 2–4 weeks; reduce during slower periods.
-
-
Flowering Notes:
-
With ample light and warmth, Brassocattleya types often bloom reliably once established.
