Bulbophyllum bootanoides is a mini-miniature orchid native to Vietnam and Thailand. It thrives in evergreen lowland forests at elevations around 1,450–1,500 meters (approximately 4,750–4,900 feet). This epiphytic orchid thrives in cool to warm conditions, making it well-suited for terrariums where temperature and humidity can be carefully controlled.

Features:

  • Size: Approximately 5–7 cm in height.

  • Flowers: Glossy, dark red with yellow-cream accents, resembling a Dutch wooden shoe. Each flower measures about 1.7 × 3.5 cm and lasts 5–7 days.

  • Blooming Season: Winter to spring.

  • Fragrance: Mild and not particularly pleasant.

  • Growth Habit: Epiphytic, with compressed, clustered pseudobulbs and a creeping rhizome.

Care Tips:

  • Light: Bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight to prevent leaf burn.

  • Temperature: Prefers cool to warm conditions, with daytime temperatures between 64–80°F (18–27°C).

  • Humidity: High humidity levels, ranging from 60% to 80%, are essential, making it ideal for terrariums.

  • Watering: Keep the medium moist, especially during the growing season. Reduce watering in winter if growth slows, but never allow the plant to dry out completely.

  • Potting Medium: Use sphagnum moss, fine orchid bark, or mount on a suitable surface.

  • Air Circulation: Ensure good airflow to prevent fungal issues.
