Bulbophyllum callichroma is a captivating miniature orchid species native to the montane cloud forests of New Guinea and the Bismarck Archipelago. This orchid is very small, making it perfect for terrariums where space and humidity can be carefully controlled.
Features:
-
Native Range: Found in Indonesia and New Guinea, particularly in montane forests at elevations ranging from 600 to 2200 meters.
-
Growth Form: An epiphytic orchid with subglobose-conical pseudobulbs, each carrying a single, lanceolate leaf.
- Flowers: Each flower is approximately 4 cm across, with a white to yellow median sepal, purple lateral sepals, and a purple lip.
Care Tips:
-
Light: Provide bright, filtered light. Avoid direct sunlight, as it can scorch the leaves.
-
Temperature: Maintain daytime temperatures between 70°F and 80°F (21°C to 27°C) and nighttime temperatures between 60°F and 65°F (15°C to 18°C).
-
Humidity: High humidity is essential. Consider growing it in a terrarium or vivarium to maintain the necessary moisture levels.
-
Watering: Water regularly to keep the growing medium moist but not soggy. Ensure good drainage to prevent root rot.
-
Mounting: Best grown mounted on cork, tree fern, or hard, rough rootstock with high humidity and strong air movement. Avoid pots, as the plant dislikes "wet feet" and must dry out between waterings.
-
Fertilization: Apply a balanced orchid fertilizer during the growing season. Reduce fertilization during the rest period in winter.
