Bulbophyllum cercanthum is a small epiphytic orchid native to Borneo, growing in wet tropical forest, especially in high forests at elevations between 200-800 meters.
Features:
-
Has a creeping rhizome, with pseudobulbs spaced about 1.5-2 cm (≈ 0.6-0.8″) apart.
-
Pseudobulbs are ovoid, slightly angular (4-5 angles in some descriptions), each with a single apical erect leaf, elliptic to elliptic-obovate, with an obtuse tip, petiolate base; leaves up to ~1 inch long.
-
Inflorescences are subumbellate, arching to nodding, 3-19 cm long overall; each carries 6-11 flowers. Each flower is about 3.5 cm long.
-
Climate/humidity demands: hot to warm-growing orchid; requires high humidity, ample water, good air circulation, with light in shade / filtered.
Care Tips:
-
Temperature: Keep it warm; daytime temps in the range of ~23-30 °C (73-86 °F) are good. Avoid letting it get too cool.
-
Humidity & Watering: Needs high humidity; keep the roots / growing medium moist, but ensure good drainage. Water regularly but avoid waterlogging.
-
Light: Provide bright, filtered or diffuse light. Avoid strong direct sunlight which may burn leaves. Shade under forest canopy is analogous.
-
Airflow & Substrate: Good air movement is important. Grow it as an epiphyte (mounting, bark, etc.) or in very free-draining mix; avoid compact media. Fertilize lightly during active growth.
