Bulbophyllum cornutum is a small, warm to cool-growing epiphytic orchid native to Borneo, Java, and the Philippines. It thrives in hill and lower montane forests at elevations ranging from 900 to 1700 meters. This species is characterized by its distinct, ovoid pseudobulbs enveloped in long, stiff bristles, and a single apical leaf with an elliptic to ovate shape. It produces a single flower on a basal, erect to patent inflorescence during the summer months.
Care Tips:
-
Light: Provide bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight to prevent leaf burn. A shaded environment with some dappled light is ideal.
-
Temperature: Maintain temperatures between 20°C to 27°C (70°F to 80°F) during the day, with a nighttime drop to around 15°C to 18°C (60°F to 64°F). Ensure a minimum temperature of 15°C (60°F) to prevent stress.
-
Humidity: Keep humidity levels between 60% and 90%. Utilize a humidifier or humidity tray to maintain consistent moisture in the air. Ensure the plant is not sitting in stagnant water to prevent root rot.
-
Watering: Water the plant 3 to 5 times per week, allowing the medium to dry lightly between waterings. Avoid letting the medium dry out completely. During the blooming period, increase watering frequency to keep the medium consistently moist.
-
Air Circulation: Ensure good air circulation around the plant to prevent fungal infections and promote healthy growth.
-
Mounting: Grow Bulbophyllum cornutum mounted on tree fern or cork bark to mimic its natural epiphytic habitat. This setup provides excellent drainage and airflow to the roots.
-
Fertilization: Apply a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer diluted to one-quarter strength every 2 to 4 weeks during the growing season. Reduce feeding during the dormant period.
