Bulbophyllum dayanum Rchb.f. is an orchid species native to parts of Southeast Asia including India, Myanmar, Cambodia, Vietnam, Thailand, and also southern China (Yunnan & perhaps Malaya). It grows as an epiphyte (on trees) and sometimes as a lithophyte (on rocks), mostly in lowland to lower montane forests (semi-deciduous, deciduous, savanna-like woodlands) from sea level up to about 700-1300 meters elevation.
Features:
-
It is a miniature-sized plant.
-
Growth habit: creeping rhizome with globose to ovoid, channeled pseudobulbs.
-
Leaves: each pseudobulb bears a single apical leaf; the leaf is oblong, leathery (coriaceous), deep green on the upper surface, purple underneath.
-
Flower size: about 2–3 cm (≈ ¾–1½ in) across.
-
Inflorescence: very short, basal (emerging at the base), with 2–5 flowers. The flowers are held below or beside the leaves, often next to the rhizome.
Care Tips:
-
Temperature: Warm to intermediate. Because some of its native range is at elevations up to ~1300 m, it may tolerate cooler nights, though the lower elevations suggest warmth is important.
-
Light: Deep shade to filtered light; avoid direct harsh sun.
-
Humidity & Moisture: High humidity; keep the media or mounting very moist during active growth. Don’t let the roots dry out too much.
-
Growing medium / mounting: Likely does well mounted or in baskets/trays, with bark, maybe moss, or similar substrate that retains moisture but drains well.
-
Ventilation: Good air circulation helps reduce risk of rot or fungal issues, especially given the damp shady habitat.
