Bulbophyllum falcatum (Lindl.) Rchb.f. is an orchid species native to tropical Western and Central Africa, ranging from Sierra Leone through the Congo to western Uganda. It grows in lowland and submontane (also called sub-montane) forests, generally as an epiphyte (occasionally lithophytic), at altitudes up to about 1800 meters, more commonly between 300-900 meters.
Features:
-
Bifoliate pseudobulbs (each pseudobulb bearing two leaves) that are broadly to narrowly ovoid and often have 2-4 angled (ribbed) surfaces.
-
Inflorescence: a very flattened, strongly undulating rachis (stem) with flowers aligned horizontally on both sides; the inflorescence can be ~16 cm long.
-
Flowers are small (~1.2 cm), numerous, with dark red (sepals) coloration; petals are very small and thread-like.
-
Growth habit: hot-growing epiphyte, occasionally lithophyte; plant size modest (often under ~10 cm height in cultivation).
Care Tips:
-
Temperature: Warm to hot conditions, consistent with its native tropical forest climate. Avoid cold or large temperature drops.
-
Light: Bright but filtered light; avoid harsh direct sun. Shade like under forest canopy works best.
-
Humidity & Watering: High humidity; keep substrate moist but not waterlogged. Ensure good air circulation to prevent fungal issues. Water more in warm/wet seasons, allow slight drying between waterings.
-
Mounting / Potting: Can be grown mounted (on bark or slabs) or in pots with free-draining, airy medium. Because this species doesn’t grow large, ensuring good root contact and moisture retention without sogginess is important.
