Bulbophyllum fonsflorum is a distinctive miniature orchid species native to the montane forests of Papua New Guinea, found in primary forests at elevations ranging from 1,800 to 2,800 meters, first described by Jaap J. Vermeulen in 1990, and belongs to the section Macrouris within the genus Bulbophyllum.

Features:

  • Growth Habit: A creeping epiphyte with a rhizome measuring 0.18–0.25 cm in diameter. Pseudobulbs are ovoid, spaced 1–2 cm apart, and range from 0.6–1.5 cm in length and 0.4–0.8 cm in width. Each pseudobulb supports a single, apical leaf that is elliptic to obovate, measuring 5.2–11 cm in length and 1.4–2.3 cm in width.

  • Inflorescence: Pendulous, measuring 27–34 cm in length, bearing 11–28 flowers. The rachis is purple, with floral bracts that are ovate and acute to acuminate in shape.

  • Flowers: The median sepal is ovate, 5.5–8.5 mm in length and 5–7 mm in width, with a caudate tip. Lateral sepals are oblique, 6.5–12 cm in length and 4–5.5 mm in width. Petals are oblique, 5.5–7 mm in length and 2.8–3.5 mm in width, with an obtuse to subacute tip.

Care Tips:

  • Light: Bright, indirect light; avoid direct sunlight

  • Temperature: Cool to cold conditions; temperatures between 48°F (9°C) and 78°F (25°C)

  • Humidity: High humidity is essential; consider growing in a vivarium or terrarium

  • Watering: Regular watering to keep the substrate moist; ensure good drainage

  • Fertilization: Use a balanced orchid fertilizer during the growing season

  • Mounting: Best grown mounted on bark or wood to mimic natural epiphytic conditions
