Bulbophyllum hyalosemoides is a rare and visually striking orchid species native to Borneo and Sulawesi, Indonesia. First described in 2011 by J.J. Vermeulen and P. O’Byrne, it belongs to the Bulbophyllum genus, subgenus Sestochilos, and section Hyalosema.
Features:
-
Origin: Found in lowland and open forests, karst sinkholes, and grasslands at elevations of 1,100 to 1,400 meters in Borneo and Sulawesi.
-
Flower Characteristics: The flowers are pale yellow to pink with a delicate net-like pattern, featuring a red lip.
-
Growth Habit: A small-sized, warm-growing epiphyte with distinct, ovoid pseudobulbs spaced 3 to 9 cm apart, each bearing a single, erect, elliptic to obovate leaf.
-
Blooming Season: Typically blooms in the spring on a basal, single-flowered inflorescence.
Care Tips:
-
Temperature: Prefers warm to intermediate conditions, with daytime temperatures between 70°F and 80°F (20°C to 27°C) and nighttime temperatures dropping to around 60°F to 64°F (15°C to 18°C).
-
Humidity: Requires high humidity levels, ideally between 80% and 85%, to mimic its native environment.
-
Light: Thrives in medium light conditions; avoid direct sunlight to prevent leaf burn.
-
Watering: Maintain a consistently moist growing medium, allowing it to dry slightly between waterings.
-
Air Circulation: Ensure good airflow around the plant to reduce the risk of fungal infections.
-
Potting Mix: Use a well-draining mix suitable for epiphytic orchids, such as a combination of bark, perlite, and sphagnum moss.
-
Fertilizing: Apply a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer at half strength every two weeks during the growing season.
