Bulbophyllum inconspicuum is a miniature epiphytic orchid native to temperate regions of East Asia, including Japan (Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu), the Ryukyu Islands, and South Korea. It thrives in cool to cold climates and is typically found growing on tree trunks in moist, shaded environments, making it well-suited for terrariums that can provide the cool, humid conditions it requires.
Features:
-
Size: This species is classified as a mini-miniature orchid.
-
Pseudobulbs: It features distant, ovoid pseudobulbs, each carrying a single, fleshy leaf. The leaves are oblong-elliptic to elliptic-oblanceolate, often caniculate (grooved), obtuse to rounded, and tapering to a short, petiolate base.
-
Flowers: The plant produces a single, small flower on a short, basal inflorescence that is held close to the pseudobulb and below the leaves. The flower is approximately 1 cm in size.
Care Tips:
-
Light: Provide bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch the delicate leaves.
-
Temperature: This orchid prefers cool to cold temperatures, with daytime temperatures ranging from 18°C to 24°C (64°F to 75°F) and nighttime temperatures around 10°C to 15°C (50°F to 59°F).
-
Humidity: Maintain high humidity levels, ideally between 60% and 80%, to replicate its native environment.
-
Watering: Water regularly to keep the medium moist, especially during the growing season. In winter, reduce watering slightly, but do not allow the medium to dry out completely.
-
Air Circulation: Ensure good air movement to prevent fungal diseases and to mimic the natural breezes of its native habitat.
-
Potting Medium: Use a well-draining mix such as sphagnum moss, fine orchid bark, or mount on a suitable surface like cork or tree fern slabs.
