Bulbophyllum lemniscatoides is a captivating miniature orchid species native to Southeast Asia, including regions like Borneo, Java, Sumatra, Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam, and Laos. It thrives in semi-deciduous and deciduous dry lowland forests and savanna-like woodlands, typically growing on tree trunks at elevations ranging from 300 to 1,670 meters (984 to 5,476 feet).
Features:
-
Growth Habit: This epiphytic orchid features a branching rhizome that gives rise to closely spaced, slightly flattened pseudobulbs with longitudinal furrows. It produces two soft, leathery, deciduous leaves that fall before blooming in the fall.
-
Inflorescence: The plant bears an erect, 10–25 cm long inflorescence with a dense, cylindrical, pendulous cluster of fragrant flowers. These flowers are subtended by small, narrow, papery bracts and are held above the leafless pseudobulb.
Care Tips:
-
Light: Place the plant in shaded conditions to mimic its natural habitat.
-
Temperature: Maintain cool to warm temperatures, ideally between 20°C and 30°C (68°F to 86°F) during the day, with slightly cooler temperatures at night.
-
Humidity: High humidity levels, around 50–70%, are essential.
-
Watering: Keep the growing medium moist during the summer, allowing it to dry slightly in winter. Avoid letting the mix dry out completely.
-
Air Circulation: Ensure good air movement to prevent fungal growth.
-
Mounting: Pot the plant in sphagnum moss, fine bark, or mount it on a suitable substrate to replicate its natural epiphytic environment.
