Bulbophyllum levinei (syn. scabratum) is a miniature epiphytic orchid that typically grows on mossy rocks or tree trunks in forested areas. Its natural range includes southern China (e.g., Hong Kong, Fujian, Guangdong, Guangxi, Hunan, Jiangxi, Yunnan, Zhejiang), Taiwan, and parts of Southeast Asia, including Vietnam, Laos, Thailand, India, Nepal, Bhutan, Sikkim, and Bangladesh. It is usually found at elevations of approximately 900 to 2,000 meters.

Features:

  • Miniature stature with ovoid, close-set pseudobulbs, each bearing a single apical leathery leaf.

  • Blooms in late spring to summer on short (2–12 cm) basal inflorescences, bearing 3–4 tiny flowers held at leaf level.

  • Flower size is extremely small—around 0.4 cm (1/8 inch).

Care Tips:

Light

  • Provide bright, indirect light.

  • Avoid direct sunlight to prevent leaf burn.

  • Ideal placement is within 1 meter of an east or south-facing window.

Watering

  • Maintain consistently moist growing media; avoid allowing it to dry out completely between waterings.

  • Increase watering frequency during the blooming period.

  • Use low-alkaline water sources like rainwater or distilled water.

Temperature

  • Daytime temperatures should range between 20°C to 27°C (70°F to 80°F).

  • Nighttime temperatures should drop to around 15°C to 18°C (60°F to 64°F).

  • Avoid temperatures below 15°C (59°F) to prevent stress.

Humidity & Air Circulation

  • Maintain humidity levels between 60% and 90%.

  • Use a humidifier or humidity tray to increase moisture levels.

  • Ensure good air circulation to prevent fungal diseases.

Growing Medium & Container

  • Suitable for shallow pots, baskets, or mounted on cork slabs.

  • Use a well-draining mix of sphagnum moss, perlite, and small bark.

  • Avoid covering pseudobulbs to prevent rot.

Fertilization

  • Apply a balanced fertilizer (e.g., 10-10-10) at ¼ to ½ strength during the active growing season.

  • Reduce fertilization during the dormant period.

Repotting & Propagation

  • Repot every 2–3 years or when the plant doubles in size.

  • Propagate by dividing the rhizome, ensuring each division has roots and at least one pseudobulb.
