Bulbophyllum lichenophylax Schltr. is an orchid species found exclusively in Madagascar, usually at elevations between 800 and 2000 meters. Like others in its section, this species exhibits creeping rhizomes with tubular sheaths and small, often flattened pseudobulbs bearing one or two soft, elliptic leaves.
Features:
-
Growth Form: This miniature epiphyte forms moss-like mats through a creeping rhizome, producing small pseudobulbs under tubular sheaths.
-
Leaves: Typically one or two delicate, elliptic leaves per pseudobulb.
-
Habitat: Endemic to the humid mid-elevation forests of Madagascar, thriving in shaded, moist environments.
Care Tips:
-
Light: Bright, indirect light or deep shade is ideal. Avoid direct sunlight to prevent leaf burn.
-
Temperature: Intermediate to warm conditions are suitable—approximately 20–27 °C (68–80 °F) during the day, with slightly cooler nights (~15–18 °C / 60–64 °F).
-
Humidity & Airflow: Maintain high humidity levels—60–90%—while ensuring good air circulation to avoid fungal issues.
-
Watering: Keep the medium consistently moist but not waterlogged. Water when the top layer begins to dry. In mounted culture, misting once or twice daily may be necessary.
-
Substrate / Mounting: Mount on cork or tree fern bark, or grow in a fine yet well-draining mix (e.g., sphagnum moss combined with fine bark) to mimic its natural epiphytic habit.
-
Fertilization: Feed with a balanced orchid fertilizer at ¼–½ strength every 2–4 weeks during active growth. Flush the medium occasionally to prevent salt buildup.
-
Maintenance: Repot or remount every 1–3 years when the growing medium begins to degrade. Ensure sufficient airflow throughout the year.
