Bulbophyllum longicaudatum (J.J. Sm., 1914) belongs to the section Polymeres and is closely related to B. nasica. It is native to New Guinea, particularly the regions of Papua and Papua Barat (Indonesia), where it inhabits lowland forests at elevations ranging from about 50 to 2,900 meters. This species is an epiphyte that typically grows in deep shade on trees, often near sea level. It produces a slender, wiry, basal inflorescence that extends beyond the leaves and bears a single flower. The bloom is distinguished by its long-tailed lateral sepals, a feature reflected in the name longicaudatum.
Care Tips:
-
Growing Conditions
Prefers warm-growing environments with consistently high humidity and excellent air circulation—typical of its native New Guinea habitat. -
Light
Thrives in bright shade—similar to the dappled light of forest understories. Avoid exposing it to intense direct sunlight, especially afternoon sun, to prevent leaf damage. -
Water & Humidity
Bulbophyllums generally prefer to remain moist but not soggy. High humidity—typically over 60%—is vital. Good air movement helps avoid rot, a common issue with overly stagnant conditions. -
Mounting & Medium
Mounting on tree fern or cork slabs with underlying sphagnum moss or similar to retain moisture is a preferred method, as it mimics the epiphytic substrate used in nature.
