Bulbophyllum makoyanum (synonym Cirrhopetalum makoyanum) is an epiphytic orchid native to Southeast Asia — specifically Malaysia, Singapore, Borneo, and the Philippines. It occurs in lowland forests and can be found at elevations up to about 300 meters above sea level.
Features:
-
Miniature to small-sized unifoliate epiphyte: each pseudobulb bears a single leaf.
-
Pseudobulbs spaced fairly closely (roughly ~2 cm between mature pseudobulbs).
-
Flowering: bears an umbel (cluster) of about 5-12 flowers on a slender basal inflorescence ~ 20 cm in length.
-
Flowers are yellow/orange with small red spots; shape somewhat “daisy-like”.
Care Tips:
-
Light: Bright, filtered or diffused light; avoid direct strong midday sun. Shade conditions are preferred.
-
Temperature: Warm to hot; typical day temperatures around 29–32 °C, nights around 22-24 °C.
-
Humidity: High humidity — about 85-90% most of the year; may dip slightly (~80%) during cooler/less light periods.
-
Substrate / Potting: Excellent drainage; use loose, aerated medium (bark, tree fern, etc.), or mount/cultivate in baskets where water drains well; avoid soggy substrate.
