Bulbophyllum medusae is a captivating species native to Southeast Asia, including Thailand, Malaysia, Borneo, the Lesser Sunda Islands, and Sumatra. This epiphytic orchid thrives in lowland forests at elevations ranging from sea level to 400 meters, where it grows on tree trunks and large branches.
Features:
-
Leaves: Each pseudobulb bears a single, apical leaf approximately 10 cm long.
-
Flowers: Clusters of 40–60 white, spidery flowers with thread-like lateral sepals resembling Medusa's hair.
-
Fragrance: Unpleasant, often likened to rotting flesh, to attract pollinating flies .
-
Blooming Season: Typically in fall and winter, with each inflorescence lasting about 10 days.
Care Tips:
-
Light: Bright, indirect light; avoid direct sunlight to prevent leaf scorch.
-
Temperature: Warm to hot conditions, ideally 24–26°C (75–79°F) during the day and 19–21°C (66–70°F) at night.
-
Humidity: High humidity levels between 60–80% are essential.
-
Watering: Keep the substrate moist but not waterlogged; water when the top inch of soil feels dry.
-
Fertilization: Use a balanced orchid fertilizer diluted to one-quarter strength every 3–4 waterings.
-
Rest Period: Does not require a dormant period; however, slight temperature fluctuations (3–4°C) between day and night can stimulate blooming.
For mounting, use a large piece of cork with a thick layer of sphagnum moss beneath the roots to accommodate its climbing nature.
