Bulbophyllum oblongum is an epiphytic orchid native to tropical Asia, including Assam (India), Bangladesh, Myanmar, and Thailand. It grows in humid evergreen forests at lowland to montane elevations, typically between 300 and 1,200 meters, often found on moss-covered trunks and shaded branches where it receives filtered light and consistent moisture.

Feature:

  • Type: Epiphytic orchid — grows on tree trunks, branches, mossy bark, etc. Not terrestrial.

  • Size / Form: Mini-miniature plant. It has small, laterally compressed pseudobulbs (~1-1.5 cm long) each bearing a single apical leaf. Flower is a single flower inflorescence about 2.5 cm across.

Care Tips:

  • Light: Bright, indirect light or filtered shade. Avoid direct midday sun, which can burn leaves.

  • Temperature: Warm to intermediate during day (~22-28 °C). Nights cooler but avoid dropping below ~12-13 °C.

  • Humidity: High humidity is essential — aim for about 70-85 % relative humidity.

  • Watering: Keep medium lightly moist but not waterlogged. Let it dry just a little between watering. If mounted, more frequent misting is beneficial.

  • Medium / Mounting: Good drainage is key. Use fine bark mix, or mount on cork or tree fern panels to imitate natural habitat.

  • Air circulation: Provide gentle airflow to avoid fungal or rot problems in high humidity.

  • Flowering: Produces a short inflorescence (often single flower), close to the pseudobulb. Flower life is not very long. Timing of flower depends on plant condition.
