Bulbophyllum odoratissimum is a miniature orchid species renowned for its delightful fragrance, a rare feature within the Bulbophyllum genus. Native to Southeast Asia, it can be found in regions such as India, Nepal, Bhutan, Myanmar, Laos, Vietnam, Thailand, and southern China. This species typically grows at elevations ranging from 800 to 2,500 meters in humid, tropical to subtropical forests, making it well-suited for cultivation in terrariums where its specific temperature, humidity, and light requirements can be carefully controlled.
Features:
- Pseudobulbs: Subcylindrical and spreading, supporting a single, apical, oblong-lanceolate leaf.
- Flowers: Clusters of 10 to 20 small, white and orange-tipped flowers arranged at mid-leaf height. These blooms emit a sweet fragrance, a rare trait among Bulbophyllum species.
Care Tips:
- Light: Provide filtered light to mimic its natural habitat in the upper canopy of forests. Avoid direct sunlight to prevent leaf burn.
- Temperature: This orchid thrives in cool to intermediate temperatures, with a range of 13°C to 29°C (55°F to 85°F).
- Humidity: High humidity levels, ranging from 60% to 80%, are essential, making it ideal for terrariums.
- Watering: Water regularly to keep the medium moist, especially during the growing season. In winter, reduce watering slightly, but do not allow the medium to dry out completely.
- Air Circulation: Ensure good air movement to prevent fungal diseases and to mimic the natural breezes of its native habitat.
- Potting Medium: Use a well-draining mix such as sphagnum moss, fine orchid bark, or mount on a suitable surface like cork or tree fern slabs.
