Bulbophyllum reticulatum is a rare and striking orchid species native to Borneo, typically found in lowland limestone forests. This lithophytic orchid naturally grows on rocks in humid, shaded environments, thriving at elevations between 200 and 1,400 meters above sea level. It is renowned for its tessellated, net-like foliage and unique floral structures.

Features:

  • Leaves: The plant features large, reticulated (net-like) leaves that are oblong to ovoid in shape, providing a distinctive appearance.

  • Pseudobulbs: It has spaced-out, oblong to ovoid pseudobulbs along its rhizome.

  • Flowers: Bulbophyllum reticulatum produces fleshy, fragrant flowers approximately 7.5 cm in width. These blooms typically emerge in summer and fall, borne on a short, two-flowered inflorescence with large sheathing bracts.

Care Tips:

This species thrives in warm, humid conditions and is best suited for cultivation in greenhouses or terrariums. It prefers intermediate to warm temperatures, with a minimum of 58°F (14°C) and a maximum of 88°F (31°C).

Light: Provide bright, filtered light. Direct sunlight can scorch the leaves.

Watering: Maintain consistent moisture, especially during the growing season. Ensure good drainage to prevent root rot.

Humidity: High humidity is essential; aim for levels above 60%.

Fertilization: Use a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer diluted to half strength during the growing season.

Mounting: This orchid can be mounted on cork bark or grown in a pot with a well-draining medium like sphagnum moss or fine bark.
