Bulbophyllum rothschildianum is native to southern Yunnan (China), northeastern India, Assam, and Myanmar. This diminutive epiphyte grows on trees in lowland forests at elevations of up to approximately 300 meters. Its flowers form striking umbels with elongated lateral petals, typically in shades of red or burgundy, often resembling a skirt or fan. A partial fusion of the petals creates a dramatic, umbrella-like structure that is highly distinctive.

Features:

  • It is small in size, featuring creeping growth, ovoid pseudobulbs bearing one apical leaf.

  • Inflorescences are umbellate clusters, typical in spring and fall. Flowers are characterized by a yellow or pale base with dark burgundy or raspberry-red spots.

  • These blooms often come with a fruity or fishy scent—some describe it as peachy-fruity.

Care Tips:

  • Light: Prefers bright, filtered or indirect light. Can tolerate intermediate to low light, but blooming may decrease.

  • Temperature: Thrives in a hot to cool ambient range—typically from about 58 °F (14 °C) to 88 °F (31 °C).

  • Medium: Best grown in pots or baskets with fast-draining mixes (e.g., bark, sphagnum moss combination).

  • Water & Humidity: Keep the medium consistently slightly moist—bulbophyllums enjoy frequent watering and high humidity. Airflow is essential to prevent mold or rot.

  • Air Movement: Good circulation helps prevent fungal issues—crucial in humid environments.
