Bulbophyllum sciaphile Bosser is a recognized orchid species endemic to central Madagascar, thriving as a miniature to mini-miniature epiphyte in humid evergreen forests at elevations of approximately 1300–1400 m. It features clustered, nearly round pseudobulbs topped with one or two spreading, elliptic to sub-orbicular leaves. In spring, it produces a 4.5 to 6 cm long inflorescence with 1 to 5 tiny flowers, each about 8–9 mm across.
Features:
-
Habit & Structure: Mini-miniature epiphyte with subglobose pseudobulbs, carrying one or two small leaves.
-
Flowers: Tiny (8–9 mm), borne on a basal inflorescence of 4.5–6 cm that may hold up to five blooms.
-
Habitat: Grows in mossy, wet evergreen forests in central Madagascar at mid-to-high elevations (1300–1400 m).
Care Tips:
-
Light: Provide bright, indirect light or deep shade, mimicking forest understory conditions. Avoid direct sunlight.
-
Temperature: Maintain that intermediate conditions, approximately 20–27 °C (68–80 °F) during the day, with cooler nights (~15–18 °C or 59–64 °F).
-
Humidity & Airflow: Keep humidity relatively high—60–90%—but ensure consistent air circulation to prevent fungal issues.
-
Watering: Keep the growing medium slightly moist at all times, avoiding complete drying. Water more frequently during active growth, less during any slower growth periods.
-
Substrate & Mounting: Use a fine, well-draining mix (e.g., sphagnum moss and bark) or mount on cork/tree fern. Mounted culture helps replicate natural epiphytic conditions and improves root aeration.
-
Fertilization: Apply a balanced, water-soluble orchid fertilizer at ¼–½ strength during active growth phases.
