Bulbophyllum sutepense is a captivating miniature orchid species native to subtropical regions of Southeast Asia, including Yunnan (China), Vietnam, Thailand, Laos, and Myanmar. This epiphytic orchid thrives at elevations between 600 and 1,600 meters, typically growing on tree trunks in sparse woodlands.
Features:
-
Pseudobulbs: Compact and rounded, resembling small pineapples, closely spaced along the rhizome.
-
Leaves: Each pseudobulb supports a single, leathery, elliptic leaf that is sessile (without a petiole) and narrows abruptly into the pseudobulb below.
-
Flowers: Small and bright yellow, measuring approximately 1.5 mm × 7 mm. They are borne in clusters of 4 to 5 on a short, basal inflorescence.
Care Tips:
-
Light: Provide bright, indirect light. Shield from direct sunlight to prevent leaf burn.
-
Temperature: Prefers warm to intermediate temperatures, with a minimum of 45°F (7°C) and a maximum of 98°F (37°C).
-
Humidity: Maintain high humidity levels, ideally between 60% and 80%, to replicate its native environment.
-
Watering: Water frequently, allowing the medium to dry slightly between waterings.
-
Air Circulation: Ensure good air movement to prevent fungal issues and mimic natural conditions.
-
Potting Medium: Use a well-draining mix such as sphagnum moss, fine orchid bark, or a combination thereof.
-
Mounting: Due to its epiphytic nature, mounting the plant on a piece of cork bark or in a shallow basket with sphagnum moss can mimic its natural habitat and promote healthy growth.
