Bulbophyllum treschii is a miniature to mini-miniature orchid from Malaysia found at altitudes of about 1000-1500 m.
Features:
-
Slow creeping, branching rhizome with closely-set, conical-ovoid, somewhat tetragonal pseudobulbs.
-
Each pseudobulb carries a single, leathery, dark green leaf that is erect to slightly spreading; acute to obtuse apex, sometimes apiculate.
-
Flowers in summer; inflorescence is descending to pendent, up to ~15 cm long, with 4 flowers opening simultaneously.
-
Distinguished from close relatives (e.g. B. plumatum) by its wrinkled, rugose sepals, more heavily spotted lip, and a lip that is shorter and more strongly squared or obtuse at the apex.
Care Tips:
-
Light: Bright, indirect light or low-to-medium light; avoid direct strong sun to prevent leaf burn.
-
Temperature: Intermediate to warm; approx. 58-88°F (~14-31°C) range; keep warm in house settings.
-
Humidity & Air Circulation: High humidity needed; good airflow helps prevent fungal problems.
-
Watering: Keep the media moist, allowing slight drying between waterings; avoid letting it fully dry out nor stay waterlogged.
-
Mounting / Medium: Often grown mounted (on bark, tree-fern slabs) or in very airy mix; good drainage is essential.
-
Growing Habit / Placement: Suitable for terrarium or greenhouse cabinet culture; for indoor home growing, provide small/light environments with controlled light and humidity.
