Bulbophyllum xanthomelanon is a rare miniature epiphytic orchid endemic to the montane forests of Sulawesi, Indonesia, where it grows at elevations of around 1,200 m (3,900 ft). The plant features creeping rhizomes with closely spaced, oval pseudobulbs, each supporting a single leathery green leaf. It produces a solitary flower approximately 1 cm (0.4 in) across on a short inflorescence. The bloom is especially distinctive, displaying bright yellow sepals and pale yellow petals accented by striking blackish-red to deep maroon details on the lip and column, creating a dramatic color contrast reflected in its name, which means "yellow and black." Compact, unusual, and seldom seen in cultivation, Bulbophyllum xanthomelanon is highly prized by collectors of miniature and species Bulbophyllums.

Care Tips:

  • Provide low to medium filtered light, avoiding direct midday sun.
  • Grow mounted or in a shallow pot with fine bark or sphagnum moss that retains moisture while allowing excellent air circulation.
  • Keep the growing medium evenly moist, never allowing it to dry out completely.
  • Maintain warm to intermediate temperatures of 20–27°C (68–80°F) during the day with slightly cooler nights.
  • Maintain 60–90% humidity with constant air movement to promote healthy growth.
  • Fertilize regularly at one-quarter to one-half strength with a balanced orchid fertilizer during active growth.
  • Repot or remount when new roots begin to develop, taking care not to bury the creeping rhizome.
