Candy Corn Orchid (Mediocalcar decoratum) is a species of miniature epiphytic orchid in the family Orchidaceae, known for its tiny, brightly colored flowers and compact growth habit. It is native and endemic to New Guinea, including the regions of Papua and Papua New Guinea. In its natural habitat, it grows as a montane forest epiphyte at elevations of 900–2500 meters, thriving in moist, shaded environments.

Features:

  • Size: Very small, typically just a few centimetres across, with dense mats of growth.

  • Leaves: Several narrow, succulent-like leaves per pseudobulb.

  • Flowers: Single tiny bell-shaped blooms, usually orange-yellow in colour, about 0.6 cm across; long-lasting and appearing near the plant base.

Care Tips:

  • Light: Provide bright, indirect light or light shade. Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves.

  • Temperature: Prefers cool to intermediate conditions (approximately 12–22°C / 55–72°F). Avoid extreme heat.

  • Humidity: Requires high humidity (60–80%). Ideal for terrariums or humid greenhouse environments.

  • Watering: Keep consistently moist but not waterlogged. Do not allow the plant to dry out completely.

  • Air Circulation: Ensure good air movement to prevent fungal or bacterial issues.

  • Mounting/Media: Best grown mounted on bark or cork, or in a well-draining, fine orchid mix.

  • Fertilizer: Apply diluted orchid fertilizer (¼ strength) every 2–4 weeks during active growth.

  • Rest Period: No strict dormancy, but slightly reduce watering during cooler months.
