Cattleya wittigiana × self (syn. Sophronitis wittigiana × self) is a species of epiphytic orchid in the genus Cattleya, native to southeastern Brazil, especially the states of Espírito Santo and Minas Gerais, where it grows on mossy, rough-barked trees in tropical montane forests at elevations of about 700–2000 m.
Features:
-
This orchid is a miniature or mini–miniature species with globular pseudobulbs arranged in two rows along a rhizome, each bearing a single stiff, leathery leaf.
-
It produces relatively large flowers (about 2.5–3 inches / 4–6.5 cm wide) on a short inflorescence, typically blooming in winter.
-
Flower color is often bright pink to light pink.
Care Tips:
-
Light:
● Provide bright, indirect light; avoid hot midday sun that can burn foliage. -
Temperature:
● Thrives in cool to intermediate conditions — ideally moderate days and cooler nights typical of montane climates. -
Watering:
● Water regularly but ensure the growing medium dries slightly between waterings; avoid waterlogging. -
Humidity & Airflow:
● Maintain moderate to high humidity with good air circulation around the plant to prevent rot. -
Growing Medium:
● Use a well-draining orchid mix (bark with perlite or charcoal) or mount on cork/fern slabs; this supports healthy aeration around roots. -
Repotting:
● Repot every 2–3 years or when the medium breaks down, ideally at the start of new growth.
