Cheilanthes smithii is a lithophytic fern native to tropical and subtropical regions of Asia, including southern China, northern Vietnam, and parts of India. Known for its remarkable drought tolerance, this fern thrives in dry, rocky environments. However, it also adapts well to high humidity, making it suitable for rainforests or terrariums. When watered, it quickly starts to grow, making it a resilient fern for any collection.

Care Tips:

  • Light: Prefers bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight to prevent leaf scorch. Keep light levels between 6000–10000 lux.

  • Soil: Thrives in well-draining, moisture-retentive substrates such as sphagnum moss or a mix of orchid bark and perlite.

  • Watering: Tolerates dry conditions but once watered, it will quickly sprout. Keep the substrate moist but not waterlogged. Mist regularly to maintain humidity.

  • Temperature: Best suited for temperatures between 28°C and 35°C (82°F to 95°F).

  • Humidity: Requires moderate to high humidity levels (40–80%). It adapts well to both dry and humid environments, making it perfect for terrariums or rainforests.
