Dendrobium lichenastrum, commonly known as the "Common Button Orchid," is a miniature epiphytic or lithophytic orchid native to the rainforests and open forests of far north Queensland, Australia. It thrives at elevations ranging from sea level to 1,950 meters and is well-suited for cultivation in terrariums or as a mounted specimen in temperate to subtropical climates.

Features:

  • Size: This species is classified as a miniature orchid.

  • Pseudobulbs: It features cylindrical, succulent pseudobulbs that are closely spaced along a creeping, branching rhizome.

  • Leaves: The plant has small, fleshy, dark green leaves that are egg-shaped to almost round, measuring 4–10 mm in width.

  • Flowers: Dendrobium lichenastrum produces a single, small flower approximately 0.8 cm in width. The flower is typically white, cream, or pink with red stripes and an orange labellum.

Care Tips:

  • Light: Provide medium to high light levels. While it can tolerate some direct sunlight, it's best to avoid the strongest midday rays, especially during summer.

  • Temperature: This orchid thrives in cool to warm temperatures, ideally between 18°C and 29°C (64°F to 85°F).

  • Humidity: Maintain humidity levels above 40%. Regular misting can help, especially in drier environments.

  • Watering: Water regularly, allowing the medium to dry out slightly between waterings. During the winter rest period, reduce watering until new growth appears.

  • Potting Medium: Use a well-draining mix such as sphagnum moss or medium fir bark. Shallow pots or mounted setups are ideal to promote quick drying after watering.

  • Fertilization: Fertilize during the growing season with a balanced orchid fertilizer.
