Atrichum undulatum, commonly known as Common Smoothcap Moss, is a species in the Polytrichaceae family and the Atrichum genus. This moss is small to medium-sized, stiff, and upright, with a dark green to brownish-green color. It grows densely or sparsely on soil surfaces or soil slopes. The stem is typically single or sparsely branched, and the base often has numerous false roots. The leaves are lance-shaped or tongue-shaped, tapering to a short point, and often feature diagonal waves. The back of the leaves is covered with diagonal spines, and the moss tends to curl or wrinkle strongly when dry. When wet, it stands upright, with sparse or dense growth.
Care Requirements:
- Temperature: The optimal growth temperature is between 15-28°C. It requires good ventilation but should not be placed in a drafty area.
- Light: Avoid direct sunlight. It needs diffused light or partial shade.
- Humidity: Maintain humidity at 65% or higher (use a hygrometer to monitor).
This moss thrives in areas with adequate humidity and ventilation, making it suitable for environments with indirect or filtered light.
