Corybas taliensis Tang & F.T. Wang (1951) is an accepted species native to western Sichuan and western Yunnan, China. It is a tuberous geophyte that thrives in temperate environments. This orchid produces a single, small flower—about 0.6 inches (1.4 cm) across—and grows terrestrially or lithophytically on mossy rocks or forest floors at elevations of 1,500–2,600 m. It is characterized by a heart-shaped, net-veined leaf and a short, hairy subterranean stem.
Care Tips:
-
Watering
Maintain moist but well-draining soil. Overwatering may cause root rot. As per Greg App, use ≈ 0.5 cups of water every 9 days in a 5-inch pot placed out of direct sunlight. -
Light Requirements
Provide bright, indirect light, placing the orchid within 3 feet of a south-facing window to keep it healthy and prevent leaf drop. -
Soil & Drainage
Use a rich, organic, well-draining mix, such as sphagnum moss blended with bark or similar material—consistent with habitats over mossy substrates. -
Temperature & Humidity
While specific data for this species is scarce, similar Corybas orchids favor cool to temperate, humid environments, mimicking their montane mossy forest habitats. Avoid extremes and ensure proper humidity without stagnation. -
Repotting & Nutrients
Fresh potting mix generally provides sufficient nutrients. Refresh or repot annually or when the plant doubles in size to maintain vigor. -
Practical Notes from Enthusiasts
Growers using coco coir alone have noted it can compact and cause rot; a well-aerated mix (e.g., sphagnum with bark) is preferred.
