Dendrobium cucumerinum, commonly known as the cucumber orchid or gherkin orchid, is a miniature epiphytic orchid native to eastern Australia. Its unique, cucumber-shaped leaves and delicate flowers make it a favorite among tropical plant enthusiasts and orchid collectors. This plant thrives in controlled environments with stable temperature and humidity, making it an ideal candidate for cultivation in terrariums or miniature ecosystems.

Features:

  • Leaves: Succulent, tuberculate, and pickle-shaped, measuring 1.5–3.5 cm in length.

  • Flowers: Cream to pale yellow or greenish-white with reddish-purple striations. Each flower is approximately 1.5–2.5 cm in diameter and blooms in clusters of up to 18 on a 3–5 cm long inflorescence.

  • Fragrance: Emits a mild, often described as unpleasant, scent.

  • Flowering Season: Occurs from November to February.

Care Tips:

  • Light: Prefers moderate to low light conditions, simulating its natural habitat where it grows on the undersides of branches.

  • Temperature: Thrives in temperatures ranging from 20°C to 30°C during the day, with a nighttime drop of 6–8°C to promote flowering.

  • Humidity: Requires high humidity levels, ideally between 70% and 75%, to mimic its native environment.

  • Watering: Maintain constant moisture during the growing season (spring and summer), reducing watering during the dry season (autumn and winter).

  • Air Circulation: Ensure strong air movement to prevent fungal diseases and to replicate natural breezes.

  • Mounting: Best grown mounted on rough-textured surfaces like cork or hardwood. The leaves typically grow downward, so mount the plant accordingly.
