Dendrobium ajoebii, a species identified by J.J. Smith in 1913, is a miniature to small-sized epiphytic orchid native to the montane forests of New Guinea, typically found at elevations between 900 and 1600 meters. This species is characterized by its creeping, often branching rhizomes and clustered, erect stems that are fusiform at the base, gradually narrowing into slender, oval stems. The leaves are thin, leathery, and glossy dark green above, dull pale green beneath, with an acute, unequally bilobed apex. The plant blooms mostly in spring, late summer, and early fall, producing flowers that are sequentially single and few-flowered on a short inflorescence.

Features:

  • Blooming Season: Spring, late summer, and early fall.

  • Flower Structure: Sequentially single, few-flowered inflorescence.

  • Flower Size: Approximately 7 cm (2.8 inches).

Care Tips:

  • Light: Provide bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight to prevent leaf burn.

  • Temperature: Maintain daytime temperatures between 70°F and 85°F (20°C to 30°C), with a nighttime drop of about 10°F (6°C). This species is warm to cool growing.

  • Humidity: Aim for moderate to high humidity levels between 50% and 70%.

  • Watering: Water regularly during the growing season, allowing the media to dry slightly between waterings. Reduce watering during the dormant period to prevent root rot.

  • Fertilization: Apply a balanced orchid fertilizer during the growing season. Reduce feeding during the dormant period.

  • Potting Medium: Use a well-draining orchid mix, such as one containing bark, perlite, and sphagnum moss.

  • Repotting: Repot every 1–2 years or when the medium breaks down to maintain healthy root systems.
